Jane the Virgin is not what it sounds like.

When it first started popping up on my netflix page, I never gave it a second glance. When my friend suggested that I watch it, I was expecting to watch the first episode and leave it in my “continue watching” section. But boy, was I wrong! This show is about a young Latina woman living in Miami with her Mom and Grandmother while chasing her dream of becoming a published author. While her grandmother taught her to “protect her flower” until marriage, her life gets turned upside down when she finds out she has been accidentally artificially inseminated with a random man’s baby. Based off of Spanish Soap Operas, Jane the Virgin has quite a story line. From unthinkable plot twists, the comical narrator, to mysterious murders, criminal masterminds, this show has every category intertwined into just five seasons. It is a must watch, for sure! (or re-watch whenever you’re bored, if you’re me).

There's too many reasons, but lets start with 10:

1. To start, the main character, Jane, is a virgin. But she finds out that she was accidentally artificially inseminated by her OB-GYN. So, she's actually a PREGNANT virgin. How's that for a pilot?

2. Every character is different which brings a great diversity to the show that anyone can love. (seriously, I even got my boyfriend hooked on it).

3. It is based off of Venezuelan “Telenovelas” or Spanish Soap Operas, the idea is that Jane loved Telenovelas so much that her life actually became one.

4. Unlike other shows, Jane the Virgin has so many special edits and is up with all of the latest trends that really add to the show.

5. There is a whole other crime story intertwined into the whole plot.

6. Every episode ends with such a huge “Telenovela” cliffhanger, you’ll never be able to stop after one episode. It’s a binge show for sure.

7. It is empowered by 3 generations of strong latina women dealing with life’s most dramatic times.

8. The unstated meaning behind the stories have amazing lessons to be learned.

9. The serious topics covered in the show including faith, sexuality, culture and religion are dealt with in a comical but respectful way.

10. Each character is diverse and changes and develops over time.

Plus, Who doesn’t enjoy a good love triangle?
